Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). She was a
fervent performer in her youth and even reenacted commercials on TV to amuse
the family. However, she decided to concentrate on dancing. After studying
ballet for 9 years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her
education under a variety of prominent dancers. She found her calling at age
15, when she defeated more than 300 contestants in an audition for an agency
for talents. She was then offered roles in Spanish TV and music videos. This
contract brought her many performances, which opened the way to a future on the
big screen. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek
Labyrinth). She also briefly was in Framed (1992) which was a Timothy Dalton
thriller. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In it she
played one of the four sisters trying to win the love of a handsome deserter

Awards. Cruz became a prominent Spanish actress with her three- to four films
per year, which was a growing list. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her
the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later
be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead
actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge
hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). The luck of her
life changed in 1998, when her film-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998)
received her the title of award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz has made a few
other attempts at English-language films, however, her first major
international hit was Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), in which she
played an unassuming but very well-meaning nun. Cruz discovered herself very
popular on both sides of the Atlantic as her film received many awards and
praises. Her next major project was Woman on Top (2000), an American comedy
about a cook with a captivating culinary skill and a severe bout of motion
