Her aunt worked in the evening shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
